Fridays bad news

29 10 2006

At the end of Friday I was told some heartbreaking news. One lady in the office came to chat and told me she had breast cancer. What had started out as a pain in the arm was diagnosed as a cancer the size of an orange. By the time of the diagnosis it had spread to the lymph node and was one viral bastard.

Those that know this lady would agree that this is shocking, heartbreaking news.

I was going to dedicate the run to Downs Syndrome. However knowing what I now know of Downs Syndrome and suddenly realising how close to home cancer is, I will dedicate the run to breast cancer. Anything that robs the world of young beautiful woman demands to be stopped.

If anyone knows of any Tokyo based charities in this area or if anyone cares to join me in the dedication, please let me know.

this week

28 10 2006

What a great week, I feel like my training has really started. Some late night runs this week and the long run today. I have the running schedule up at work. I colour in each day. Blue for rest and red for training. So far so good, reds and blues in all the right places.

The problem with where I live in Tokyo is that it is pretty built up. I have a choice of either running through little tiny side streets or by the side of busy roads. The former is a trap for becoming lost, the latter is a risk of lung cancer.

The 10km was todays run and I manage to do it. I found a compromise route for the run. Part was run along a main road but the rest was run along side roads and the Meguro river. It has a comfortable amount of hill climbs and a pedestrian bridge to boot. The pedestrian bridge brings back fond memories of crippiling cramp during the Unofficial Tokyo marathon of 2004.  At around 27km point all us runners had to cross a road using a pedestrian bridge. It was halfway up that cramp hit me. One thing I learnt is you should always listen to your body. This was basically my pins telling me to slow down. I ended up walking the rest of the way bar the last 500 metres past the finishing line.

So what is this cross trainig all about. I plan to cycle to the gymn and hit the machines tomorrow.

To date – no alcohol since the 1st October 2006. No bread since 26th October 2005. – Sorry for adding this but I am a strong believer that your diet is an essential part of training.

Alcohol as a performance enhancer

27 10 2006

Ok, this is, if I have read Paul’s posts correctly we are in week 18 so we were meant to do and I did:

Day Mon Tues Wed Thu Fri Sat Sun
Plan rest 5km 5km 5km rest 10km rest
Actual 3.4km rest 5km gin 10km TBD TBD

Which I think is fairly good going, especially when Thursday involved a lot of Bombay Aaphire, rocks and lime.  After which, getting home in time for a late dinner of tacos (or was that breakfast), I woke up after a hearty 3 hours sleep raring to go for a run, which is remarkably pleasant at 4am in the morning.

Running through the Singapore Botanic Garden is a bit scary at this time of morning as there isn’t that much light and with the ipod blaring its fairly surreal.  Particularly when you come out on the wrong side of the park to discover that the gate is locked closed and the park doesn’t open until 7am.  I was not confidient of navigating to the side gate at which I entered so it was a quick climb over the gate.

But all in all a very enjoyable run.  Oh and it was particularly pleasing to run past Orchid Towers where the riff raff hang out and most of the blokes (that weren’t sleeping it off) looked fairly incapacitated.

Hence I may have to try this formula again to validate the performace enhancing properties of Bombay Saphire.

You will catch cold

24 10 2006

Today was suppose to be the day I start my training. The aim was to run 5km as part of week 2, Tuesday of the novice running planner.

It is now 8pm, I have 3 hours to decide to start running or not. It is raining, It is cold and it is windy !! and now it is dark. Plus the wife is advising against it. What to do ?
