Wings
8 08 2006Or rather, wingtips. Flew home to Tokyo from Hong Kong on the oldest plane I’ve ever been on. A 747 from the era of .. well, airplane disaster movies.
It had a spiral staircase. The captain proudly annouced prior to take off that there would be ‘no entertainment on this flight’. He wasn’t being cruel : there were no TVs on the plane.
I was in business class and thus entitled to the novel splendour of radio. 80′s pop. For four hours. Back in economy they were fighting over a vintage Scrabble© set and pack of Japan Airlines playing cards.
Not knowing a heap about airplanes, I’d suggest the Paul rule is .. look for one with wingtips, those bits at the end of the wing that look like they were folded up a bit. That should cover recent 747s, 777s and larger Airbuses. Admittedly, being in Japan, I do know that the 747-400s used on Tokyo<->Sapporo, the world’s busiest route, are special, and actually dont have the wingtips. They are fine though, and the exception that proves the rule.
Here’s my ‘plane :

If I ever fly that thing again, I’ll be sure to pack my wide ties and polyester suit.
Anyhow, against the odds I’m safely back in Japan now and with no excuse not to run.
