1st time outdoors in Singapore

15 07 2006

I’ve been a wuss and running inside on the treadmill up until today.  The average temperature and humidity in Singapore is so high that it seemed like a dumb idea to run outdoors.  But its boring running on the treadmill.

A colleague of mine told me that when he ran out doors in Singapore his heart rate went through the roof, not through effort of running but through the bodys attempt to shed heat.

Well this morning I set off from Belmond Green running and walking through some of the expat districts of Singapore.  Eventually I got down to Boat Quay and followed the water line around and back to Little India.

At Little India it started to rain and I was still about 5km away from home so I bought myself a nice cold water and hopped in a taxi to take me home.

So my first outdoor run was 20.05km in about 3 hours (which is really a walk!)

Hot in the City

It was 38 degrees Centigrade in parts of Japan today, and 35 degrees in Tokyo. I couldn’t face the Japan metro and it was too hot to cycle. So I sheepishly took an airconditioned taxi all the way to work.

Felt bad about it all day, so in an attempt to make up… ran home. Otemachi to Shibuya. It took an hour, from 8 until 9 , with my work clothes slung into my rucksack on my back. It was still hot, and I walked for about 10 minutes near Nagatacho, but whatever, I ran home !

A new “sports” watch

14 07 2006

I thought I had lost my Casio calculator watch on a recent trip to Yokohama so I went out and bought another casio “sports” watch. Its not really a sports watch but thats my only update for this week. Sadly I forgot my gear today so I’ll try to grab an hour or two the weekend and run again.

Current target (wish list) : 29 mins for 5km

Joe was in the middle of Yokohama somewhere, extricating himself out of some barn full of IT equipment, so I ran alone today. Clocked the 5Km in 32 mins. It felt very humid and I felt slow and unenthusiastic.

In better news, appear to have recruited Andy and possibly Ed to join this madness too. We’ll see.

Another 5Km today after work, trailing the same obliging Joe. Foolishly openly promised I’d buy a proper sports watch if I broke 30 mins. Something to better time the lightning fast runs I’ve been thrilling Tokyo with. Anyway, material gratification will have to wait: managed it in 31 minutes… :-(

Hong Kong : Island Shangri La

10 07 2006

Spent the week in Hong Kong and for penance, every morning after the night before (or was it morning) I felt I needed to try and sweet out the alcohol and burn off the calories.  Hence it was up every morning of the week for a 10km run.  The gym in the Shangri La was very nice with a view out across a walk way.

The best thing about the gym was they had about 5 different types of water:

  • wather with lemon
  • water with apple
  • water with pinnaple
  • water with strawberry
  • water with pear

I think I did about 50km this week over the 5 days.
